Under the Moontower Sci-Fi and Fantasy Club

What we’re about

There are a lot of sci-fi and fantasy clubs, but this one is specifically for fems and thems (but open to all friendly folx and allies) who love science fiction, fantasy, gaming, and more geeky goodness. Engage in conversation about creative works and activities with others who share a common interest in things like parallel worlds, speculative futures and alternative histories.

While we started in 2018 as a book club, we have since branched out into a variety of fun stuff. There's a monthly book club, but also a discord with opportunities for things like watch-alongs and extended discussion with new friends. We are intentional about the spaces we create and the media we share, with a focus on reading books, playing games, and featuring discussions on underrepresented creators and characters. We welcome anyone who wants to share more media created by women, LGBTQ+ folx, and authors who are Black, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Latinx, and international authors who expand our perspectives beyond our headquarter state of Texas.

Our organizers set the intention of making every event a safe space for people to share and be themselves. All are welcome to come and geek out with us!

Book Club: The Ten Percent Thief by Lavanya Lakshminarayan

This book throws you into a not-so-unthinkable future starkly divided by class, status, and access to tech, where the top 20% have every comfort and privilege imaginable, the bottom 10% live in analog exile, and the middle 70% live in constant tension of striving for nearly impossible promotion to the top and fearing deportation to the bottom for any transgression.

Join us for some Black Mirror vibes as we explore how technology access and arbitrary status impose real impact on the livelihoods, relationships, and sanity of the populace.

Book Club: The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

This month we will be jumping into some dark urban fantasy that speaks to that part of all us bookworms that hungers to devour new books. In this story, gritty truth is folded into a uniquely imagined world where legacy and family are presented as a gilded cage, but a cage nonetheless.

If you’re into characters driven by the kind of love that drives them to incredible acts of courage and extreme acts of survival, check this one out!

If you read last month's book and wanted to see what it would be like for humanity to make a different decision about how to face environmental catastrophe, and also what would happen if the mission intended to save humanity became a pressure cooker of disaster and suspicion, then this is your next recommended read.

Who doesn't want to read a whodunit in space?

Book Club: A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys

Happy Earth Month! This month we are reading a book with heavy climate themes. What if we stopped pretending that climate change wasn't as big of a problem as it is and it changed the course of how society functioned? And then suddenly ALIENS!

A little solarpunk, a little dystopian, a little first contact, and a lot of intercultural and interspecies relationship navigation.
