History
Under the Moontower started in 2017 as one little book club made up of three strangers meeting at Butterfly Bar in East Austin. Reflecting the purpose of our namesake moontowers, which brought spots of light and safety to Austin’s streets, we always aimed to create shared spaces for open and supportive conversation.
Within a few years, we became a social club with hundreds of online members, hosting social nights, game nights, movie screenings, and field trips. We knew we had tapped into a special kind of community.
As of January 2026, we are now host to several groups with unique focus areas. With more than 300 events hosted and more than 2,000 members, it’s time for these groups to become a coordinated network. While each group is different, the common threads remain rooted in our past of creating welcoming opportunities for connection and shared enthusiasm.
We are currently rebuilding after moving our events from our old platform to this new site. We hope you will follow along and help us continue to grow!
Our Philosophy
We believe in compassion and bravery in pursuit of our shared interests. We seek out ideas that challenge us and our own world views. We invite open sharing with room for difference and disagreement without judgment. We acknowledge that we can presume positive intent, recognize when intent doesn’t match impact, and offer space for learning and repair.
We aim to embrace enthusiasm and exploration and we invite you along in all your beautiful uniqueness!
